How to Take Progress Photos That Actually Show Progress

By Coach Kimo · July 22, 2026 · 1 min read

The scale lies sometimes. Photos usually don't. When your weight stalls but your waist is shrinking, photos are how you see it. Here's how to take them right.

1. Same time, same conditions

Take photos first thing in the morning, after the bathroom and before eating or drinking. Food, water and pumps after a workout can change how you look a lot over a single day.

2. Same lighting

Use the same room, the same light and ideally the same time of day. Facing a window in natural light is simple and flattering in an honest way. Avoid harsh overhead lights that create shadows that come and go.

3. Same angles, every time

Take three photos:

  • Front: arms relaxed at your sides, feet hip-width apart.
  • Side: stand tall, arms relaxed.
  • Back: same stance as the front.

Use a timer or a phone stand set at about chest height, the same distance from you every time. Mark the spot on the floor with tape.

4. Same clothes

Wear the same fitted shorts, sports bra or underwear each time. Different clothes make comparisons almost impossible.

5. Relax. Don't flex.

Stand naturally. Flexed photos are fun, but relaxed photos show real change.

6. Every two weeks, not every day

Daily photos will drive you crazy. A biweekly rhythm is frequent enough to catch trends and slow enough to show real change. It's exactly the schedule my coaching clients follow for their check-ins.

Put the photos to work

Photos are only useful if someone reviews them and adjusts your plan. In my 1:1 coaching, every biweekly check-in includes your weight and photos, and I adjust your macros and training based on what we see.
