How Many Days a Week Should I Lift?

By Coach Kimo · August 5, 2026 · 1 min read

The best training frequency is the one you can repeat for months. Here's how to choose.

The short answer

  • 3 days a week: perfect for beginners and busy schedules. Full-body sessions hit every muscle about three times a week.
  • 4 days a week: the sweet spot for most people. An upper/lower split lets you train hard and recover well.
  • 5–6 days a week: for intermediate lifters chasing size who have the time and recovery (sleep, food, low stress) to support it.

What actually builds muscle

Muscle growth comes from weekly volume (hard sets per muscle), progressive overload (adding weight or reps over time) and recovery. Frequency is just a way to spread that volume across your week.

Most research-backed recommendations land around 10–20 hard sets per muscle group per week, with each muscle trained about twice a week. You can hit that on three days or five. More days isn't automatically better.

Pick based on your real life

Ask yourself:

  1. How many days can I realistically train on my worst week, not my best?
  2. How long can each session be?
  3. How well am I sleeping and eating?

If the honest answer is three days, a great 3-day program beats a 5-day program you skip half the time.

Don't forget cardio

Lifting builds the engine. Cardio keeps it healthy and helps with fat loss. Weekly cardio targets, like a set number of steps or minutes, are easy to fit around any lifting schedule.
